Real Joy - Real Faith - Real Life: Count It All Joy

Today's lesson focuses on James 1:2-11. We will discuss how we can possibly count it ALL JOY when we meet trials of various kinds. And does James mean we can achieve perfection by being steadfast in trials? And what does wisdom have to do with any of it?

Real Joy - Real Faith - Real Life: Overview of James

In this lesson we look at the who, what, when, where, and why of the book of James. We discuss authorship, context, historical background, and key themes in order to gain a big picture understanding before we begin our in depth, verse-by-verse study next week.

Real Joy - Real Faith - Real Life: Introduction to Part 2

Real Joy - Real Faith - Real Life: All Things Through Him

Our last lesson in Philippians! In the final chapter of his letter, Paul returns to the main themes of unity and joy and contentment. It was a chilly morning so we enjoyed having Bible study before a crackling fire, which you hear in the audio :)

Real Joy - Real Faith - Real Life: Let Us Hold True

In this lesson, we continue to discuss Paul's single-minded determination to follow Jesus. "One thing I do," he writes, this one thing comprising his life's ambition summarized by forgetting what lies behind, straining toward what lies ahead, and pressing on toward the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. We talk about what seems to be arrogance on Paul's behalf when he urges the church to imitate him and we close with the relevance of his warning about enemies of the cross whose chief desire is to please themselves.

Real Joy - Real Faith - Real Life: The Surpassing Worth

In Philippians 3:1-11 Paul warns his readers of the dangers of the "gospel and _____" being taught the Judaizers, the "dogs," even going so far as to claim what they are proclaiming as evil. In order to show the foolishness of placing confidence in one's accomplishments and status, he demonstrates from his own life and testimony the priceless treasure Christ is to him. There is much to encourage in this lesson and much to challenge and convict!

Real Joy - Real Faith - Real Life: It is God Who Works

After technical difficulties with the last lesson's audio recording, our podcast resumes with this lesson on Phil. 2:12-30. I want to make note of one incorrect statement: in the lesson I quote Elyse Fitzpatrick and mention doing a study by her on Hebrews. That Hebrews study I have in mind was actually written by Nancy Guthrie though still highly recommended! The book by Elyse that I quote (and also highly recommend) is "Because He Loves Me."

Real Joy - Real Faith - Real Life: To Live is Christ

Today's lesson focuses on Phil. 1:18-30 and Paul's confident testimony that for him to live is Christ and to die is gain. We discuss both how death is gain as well what a life lived fully and completely to the glory of Christ entails. We speak of the importance of prayer and how to live worthy of the gospel. The lesson closes with the somber reality of suffering for the believer.

Real Joy - Real Faith - Real Life: Christ is Proclaimed

In Philippians 1:3-18 we learn how the gospel informs our prayers, our relationships, and even our struggles and difficulties. What confidence we have in our God who begins and finishes His good work! How I hope our goal is the same as Paul's: only that in every way Christ is proclaimed...and in that we rejoice!

Real Joy - Real Faith - Real Life: Introduction to Philippians

In today's lesson we talk some more about what constitutes Bible study and why women studying the Bible together with women is important. We discuss a basic hermeneutical approach and then move into our unit on real joy, real faith, and real life. We look at the background of Philippians, the beginning of the Phillipian church in Acts 16, and then close out with a discussion of Phil. 1:1-2.
